2026 Northeast Missouri Beekeepers Association Youth Beekeeping Scholarship Recipient

Peightyn Johnson, 10, of Revere, Missouri, was awarded the Northeast Missouri Beekeepers Association Youth Beekeeping Scholarship. The scholarship opportunity was released to the public in December 2024, and all youth (ages 8-18), in Lewis, Clark, Scotland, and Knox counties were eligible to apply.

Peightyn Johnson is a 4th grader who loves learning new things and staying busy. Her favorite subject in school is math, and she enjoys reading the Billie B Brown series.

Peightyn enjoys dance, tumbling, and pageants, and she stays involved in many activities. She is active in 4-H and was proud to serve as Treasurer for Student Council. In her free time, she enjoys baking and going on side-by-side and 4-wheeler rides with family and friends.

Peightyn is the daughter of Kevin and Shelby Johnson. She has one brother and is excited to soon welcome another sibling to the family. At home, she helps care for chickens, fainting goats, turkeys, dogs, and now even bees!

Through beekeeping, Peightyn has already learned how to clean up an old hive, place bees into a hive, properly introduce the queen bee, and identify the different parts of a hive. She has also learned how to spot the queen bee among the others and helps care for her bees by feeding them a sugar water mixture every day.

When Peightyn grows up, she hopes to become a zoologist because of her love for animals, nature, and learning about living things.

As the award recipient, Johnson is entitled to a one-year membership to NEMOBA, hive construction materials, a package of bees, beekeeping safety equipment and hive equipment, and mentoring by NEMOBA membership for one year, including assistance in extracting the first year’s honey crop.

Johnson was awarded the scholarship by Chris Pearl, NEMOBA President and Wesley Lay, NEMOBA Vice-President during their monthly meeting on May 4, at the Lewis County Regional Airport. She already received her package of bees and installed them into the hive on April 17, 2026, and as of May 4th they are doing great.
