Community Invited To Revolutionary War Patriot Marker Dedication

The community is invited to help celebrate a special piece of Scotland County history during a marker dedication ceremony for Revolutionary War Patriot Richard Gale Sr.

The Jauflione Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host the ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the Downing House Museum Complex, 311 S. Main St., Memphis. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the Memphis First Christian Church Fellowship Hall.

The dedication is being held in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Gale holds a unique place in local history as the only Revolutionary War patriot buried in Scotland County.

The event is sponsored by the Memphis DAR Jauflione Chapter, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The ceremony will include participation from the Honorable E. Richard Webber, the Memphis VFW Post 4958 color guard, Missouri Sons of the American Revolution Militia Men, the City of Memphis, Scotland County R-1 students, the Memphis Community Players, the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce, Downing House Museum members, descendants of Richard Gale Sr. and possibly a few surprise guests.

A reception with refreshments and cake will follow at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 320 S. Main St., Memphis.

Mayor Mike Ahland recently signed a proclamation in preparation for the dedication ceremony. The proclamation will be read during the May 15 event.
