Here we are again, the middle of another month. This time, the warm temperatures and sunshine feel so good. I’ve been freezing these last few weeks with the cold weather!
We’ve already had our first nest of baby robins hatch and leave, with a little help from a raccoon. Our “cabin robin,” who always blesses us with babies, had a raccoon try to get into the nest over the window where I decorate with all kinds of garlands and fishing and hunting ornaments. It’s a hard place to reach, but the raccoon managed to destroy two of the ornaments.
I repaired all the decorations, deer antlers and other things, cleaned up the old garlands, and put up new ones.
The hummingbirds are starting to speed up, and more are arriving. They’re buzzing the house! They were slow to come at first, probably because of the cold temperatures.
To this day, I still have no wrens, not even on the trails. I think they must be confused. I usually have one building a nest on the front porch, but nothing so far.
I’m glad for the 10 bluebird eggs I have incubating. Wrens can be very hard on bluebird nests, they’ll tear up the nest and smash the eggs in a heartbeat.
I also purchased a sweet little chicken coop from a friend in Memphis and picked up some hens off of Swap Shop. I’m back in the chicken business this summer, and I’m so excited!
We always had chickens here on the farm, but after the old chicken house wore out, I gave them up. I used to buy pullets from our dear neighbor Beverly Dietrich.
I hadn’t let the new hens out of the coop until today, and they really enjoyed the fresh dirt, scratching and scratching! I don’t have to worry about leftover food anymore. They amuse me, and they’ve gotten to know me. They get excited when they see me coming to check on them.
I’m having fresh lettuce and radishes from my garden. I haven’t planted any other vegetables yet, but I got a good deal on some Purple Fountain Grass in Cantril, so I planted that in my flower beds. I also planted zinnia seeds and some beautiful sunflowers that Michelle Ebeling shared with me.
On Saturday, May 3rd, I ran to Ramers for a walking taco and a visit with Michelle and Rhonda. I saw so many friends I hadn’t seen in ages! They have a lot of planters, hanging baskets, and so many things to choose from.
I’m trying to stick to my plan of planting around Mother’s Day.
I hope May is treating all of you well. Enjoy this beautiful weather.
Until next time, good birdwatching!
Hello to Vicki Gutting, it was so good to catch up with you and Sharon.
