Voters in Scotland County will go to the polls on Tuesday, April 8, to decide on a series of local contests and one countywide ballot measure. The election will determine leadership in city governments, school districts, village boards, and a key funding proposal for infrastructure improvements.
One of the central items on the ballot is Proposition 1, which asks voters whether to continue a countywide sales tax of one-half of one percent to fund capital improvements for roads and bridges. The tax, if approved, would be extended for four more years. County officials note that this is not a new tax but a continuation of an existing measure that supports critical infrastructure work across Scotland County.
In the Knox R-I School District, three candidates are running for two seats on the Board of Directors. Voters will choose from Alan Peavler, Shelly Bugh, and Martha Strange. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will each earn a three-year term on the board.
The City of Gorin will see Francis Nicholson on the ballot for a four-year term as mayor. Nicholson is running unopposed. In the East Ward, Donald Pflum is seeking a two-year term as alderman, also without opposition. The West Ward has Dorothy Kussman and Billy Bergheger are vying for that seat.
In Memphis, Michael R. Gundy is the only candidate listed for the West Ward alderman position, while Jenny Rebecca Aldridge and Mike Stone are running for the East Ward position. Both terms are for two years.
The Scotland County Nursing Home District has an opening for Director in District #4 for a three-year term. No candidates are listed on the ballot for that seat, meaning the position will be decided by write-in votes.
In the Village of Arbela, Brenda Giberson and Christi Wiley are running for two available trustee positions, each for a two-year term. Voters in the Village of Granger will also choose two trustees, though no candidates are listed on the ballot, leaving both positions open to write-in candidates. In the Village of Rutledge, two candidates—Carol McCabe and Maynard Johnston—are running for two open trustee seats. Voters will also have the option to submit write-ins.
Polling for all precincts will take place at the Boyer Event Center, located at 106 South Market Street in Memphis, Missouri. Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. Voters who are unable to enter the polling place due to illness or mobility concerns may receive curbside assistance along Madison Street on the north side of the building. Absentee ballots can be requested by mail through Wednesday, March 26, while in-person absentee voting will remain available until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at the County Clerk’s Office. The office will also open for absentee voting on Saturday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Logic and accuracy testing for voting equipment will be held on Friday, April 4, at 9:00 a.m. at the Scotland County Courthouse, and members of the public are welcome to attend.
