The Mammography Department at Scotland County Hospital, in Memphis, has passed the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) State Inspection with zero deficiencies. A Certificate of Inspection was recently presented to Scotland County Hospital. The Radiology Department Supervisor, Deanna Rowland, RT(R)(M)(CT), is responsible for complying with the MQSA regulations at the Hospital.
“This deficiency free inspection reflects Scotland County Hospital’s commitment to providing quality care. The community can have confidence in the equipment that we use to diagnose and treat our patients,” said Dr. Meagan Weber, Scotland County Hospital CEO.
During this inspection, the state reviews all of the department’s documentation. This consists of the quality of care, quality control, instrument maintenance, letters to patients, follow-up letters, quality of exams including the imagery, and number of continuing-education hours for each Technologist and Interpreting Radiologist over a three-year period. The Certificate of Inspection is only issued to those facilities that are clearly above the average in comparison with their peers.
“This is a big accomplishment for our Radiology Department. It’s very difficult to pass this inspection with zero deficiencies. The State scrutinizes everything we do. To achieve a zero deficiencies inspection takes dedication and meticulous attention to detail, which results in better patient care all around. This is our third year in a row to get a 100%, deficiency free inspection,” said Rowland, Radiology Supervisor.
Scotland County Hospital offers 3D mammography exams that utilize advanced breast tomosynthesis technology. The 3D mammography machine can increase the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously decreasing the likelihood that a woman will be asked to return for additional testing. In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. Scotland County Hospital’s 3D mammography equipment provides an exam that includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.
Ask your primary healthcare provider if you are due for a screening mammogram. If you are not sure whether your insurance plan covers 3D mammograms, call and ask. Both Medicare and Medicaid cover 3D mammograms.
