Celebrating Family-Owned Businesses: Spotlight on Hopkins Lumber Company

ST. LOUIS, MO — The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is proud to commend and recognize thesignificant contributions of family-owned businesses within the St. Louis District Office as we approachNational Small Business Week, which will take place from May 4-10, 2025. This year’s spotlight is on HopkinsLumber Company, a commendable example of community engagement and entrepreneurial spirit in ruralNortheast Missouri.

 In September 2021, Casey and Lydia Clatt acquired Hopkins Lumber Company, a third- generation family-ownedenterprise in Scotland County. Renowned for providing high-quality building and home improvement materials,Hopkins Lumber plays a vital role in servicing its community and surrounding areas.

 Casey Clatt, with a solid background in construction, returned to the family business in 2011. Partnering withLydia, a former Teller Supervisor and special education teacher, the couple embarked on a mission to upholdHopkins Lumber’s legacy. Their determination strengthened after obtaining an SBA 7(a) loan in August 2021,which enabled essential expansions and enhancements. Thanks to SBA assistance, they have successfullyexpanded their operations, securing additional buildings for office space and establishing a dedicated area forwindow and screen repair.

 “Our Small Business Week awards showcase the achievements of outstanding small businesses and lenderswho are making a difference in our state by creating jobs, increasing economic prosperity, and helping theircommunities thrive,” St. Louis District Director Maureen Brinkley said. “My congratulations to the Clatt Familyand the St. Louis District. We are honored to have them join a long list of previous family-owned businesses wehave celebrated throughout the years!”

 The Hopkins Lumber Company exemplifies small business success and unwavering dedication to communityservice in rural Missouri. As we celebrate National Small Business Week, the SBA is honored to recognize the Clatt family’s commitment to entrepreneurship and the profoundimpact of family-owned businesses on local economies.
