The Scotland County Area of Retired Teachers and Retired School Personnel Association (S..C.A.R.T.A.) hosted the Missouri Retired Teachers Association (M.R.T.A.) Region 3 Annual Meeting on October 17, 2024, at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Memphis.
Scotland County Unit President Rhonda McBee welcomed over forty retired educators and state Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Public School Personnel (MRTA) officials. Teresa Cotton, retired Scotland County R-1 elementary teacher, provided the entertainment with her rendition of Patsy Cline’s song “She’s Got You”. Guest speaker Dr. Yevgeniia “Jane” Gordiichuck, Scotland County R-1 Junior High Math teacher, discussed the school system of the Ukraine.
Region 3 Vice-President Jane Callis from Paris, Missouri, introduced MRTA State President Dr. Gail “Hap” Hariston who shared thoughts about “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” in education and the teaching profession. Maria Walden, MRTA State Executive Director, discussed the Missouri retirement system and MRTA membership with attendees.
Other officials and unit committee chairs informed the group about legislation, membership, retirement education, protective services, community service, and AMBA Insurance.
The Region 3 2024 Distinguished Retiree of the Year was awarded to Region 3 Vice-President Jane Callis.
Dr. Ryan Bergesen, Scotland County R-1 Superintendent, gave closing remarks and thanked the area retired teachers who volunteer with Oasis Reading Program, tutor, substitute teach, coach, and help with extra-curricular programs. Part of the S.C.A.R.T.A. purpose is to help retired teachers and retired school personnel to maintain identity with the education profession and to further the cause of education.
Scotland County MRTA Unit Host expresses its appreciation and thanks to the Memphis First Christian Church, State MRTA Officers, Elaine Forrester, Darl Davis, and others who assisted in making this meeting a success. The following business and individuals provided items for the goody bags given to each guest: Downing House Museum Complex, Exchange Bank of Northeast Missouri, Farm Bureau Insurance. Hawkins Harrison Insurance, Memphis Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Department of Conservation, Sarah Myers, Northeast Missouri Rural Telephone Company, Pizza Hut, Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Scotland County Memorial Library, Scotland County Pharmacy, Shelter Insurance (Monty Mumford), Matt and Angie Tipling, TJ’s Grocery, Tri-County Electric, Truman State University Department of Education, and Truman State University Public Relations.
MRTA Region 3 is in the northeast section of Missouri and includes the fourteen counties of Ralls, Monroe, Macon, Linn, Sullivan, Putnam, Schuyler, Scotland, Clark, Lewis, Marion, Shelby, Knox, Adair. The Region is mainly a rural farming area with a few industries and is made up of small communities and schools. Schools are the hub of our communities and often the largest employer. Education is a vital part of these communities.
