NEMOnews Media Group Wins 10 Awards at Convention, Memphis Democrat Awarded For Outdoor Feature

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — NEMOnews Media Group took home 10 awards in the 2024 Better News Contest, sponsored by the Missouri Press Association. The awards, recognizing work done in 2023, were presented at the 158th Annual Missouri Press Convention in Springfield.
The Media in Kahoka earned three awards, including second place for Best Election Story and third place for Best News Series for its coverage of Kahoka’s water bond issue. The Media also received a second place award for Best Photo Package for its coverage of the August 2023 flash flooding.
The Edina Sentinel won two first-place awards and four additional awards. Editor Echo Menges received first place in the Best Breaking News category for her coverage of a train collision in Gorin. Menges also earned a first place award for Best Photo Package and two second place awards in the Best Breaking News and Multi-Media Reporting categories for her coverage of the Baring tornado. Her photo of the Baring postmaster collecting mail from the ruins of the post office won third place for Best News Photograph. Additionally, Menges received a third place award in the Best Health Care category for her reporting on the renovation of the NEMO Family Health Clinic in Edina.
The Memphis Democrat secured an award in the Best Story About The Outdoors category with Emily Bontrager’s feature about 100-year-old hunter Ray Swingle.
