Henry Arthur “Rick” Swearingen

Henry Arthur (“Rick”) Swearingen, age 88 of Springfield, IL passed away on January 5, 2024. He was born March 8, 1935 in Scotland County, Missouri to Elza and Mary (Shultz) Swearingen. He graduated from Bible Grove High School in 1953 and joined the US Army where he was known as “Hank”. He served from 1954 to 1956 as a paratrooper. Upon his return, he attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL for two years. While there, he met Esther Ensor, whom he would marry in May 1958. They started their family in Quincy while he worked at International Harvester. The family later moved to Springfield, IL and he continued to work for International until retiring in 2014(!).  Henry was a Shriner and Freemason for more than 50 years.

Besides his parents, Rick was predeceased by his wife, Esther; his brothers, Clyde, Jess, Ike and Peter; his sisters, Mildred Wilson, Arleta Sunderland, and Norma Kigar; and his sons, Kevin and Doug Swearingen.

He is survived by his son, Arthur of Springfield; daughter, Karen Argentine (husband, Dean) of Pensacola Beach, FL; son, Chris Sunderland (wife, Michelle O’Malley) of Downer’s Grove, IL; and grandchildren, Josh and Zack Argentine and Cassie and Mia Bravo as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.  

A family graveside service will take place at a later date at Greensburg Cemetery.
