Scotland County 4-H youth recently participated in an engaging Show Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) training event designed to strengthen their knowledge in animal care, production and food safety. The event was a collaborative effort between Brenda Schreck, University of Missouri Extension Field Specialist in Livestock, and Kristy Eggleston-Wood, Scotland County 4-H Youth Program Assistant.
The evening began with a group presentation by Schreck, introducing the SMQA program and the food supply continuum. Youth participants were then divided into six small groups to rotate through a series of interactive, hands-on learning stations. These stations focused on practical skill development in livestock management, carcass quality, and general animal care.
Four stations were led by local agricultural business professionals, offering real-world insights into livestock production. Kristy Eggleston-Wood presented on carcass quality and bruising, while Lisa Doster, University of Missouri Extension Engagement Specialist, led a station focused on general animal care.
To conclude the evening, Schreck brought all participants together for a comprehensive session on animal handling and livestock safety.
“This program helps youth understand their responsibility in producing a safe, high-quality food product.,” said Schreck. “It also builds confidence through hands-on learning and community engagement.”
The SMQA program is a vital part of Missouri 4-H’s efforts to prepare youth for success in livestock projects and beyond, reinforcing best practices in animal welfare and food safety.
