Representatives from the Scotland County Business and Professional Association reported that only one of two $50 U.S. savings bonds offered as grand prizes in the Peanut Day festivities had been claimed as of June 17. An estimated 3,000 bags were sold by volunteers June 15 from 9 am to noon at several locations across Memphis.

Scotland County Commissioners were alerted early Friday morning that a county road north and west of Crawford was no longer a road, but now part of a planted field. According to Commissioner Lee Schultz, the situation was investigated, markers were placed to where the road once was, and a sign was posted to alert motorists of the situation. She state she knows of no legal action taken to close the road.

Under the shade of a welcome tent and trees of the Rutledge City Park, approximately 150 residents of the Rutledge community and surrounding area were guests of the Rutledge Crackerjacks 4-H Club, Sunday, June 6, at 12:30 pm, for an old-fashioned picnic. To patronize the Bicentennial theme decorations of red, white, and blue were used and “Old Glory” was proudly flown. Several of the ladies were wearing dresses of early American design. A wagon stacked with hay in the background provided a country setting.

Billy Grammer will be one of the featured acts at the World’s Largest Street Fair to be held July 11-15 in Keokuk, it was announced this week. Following his smash recording of “Gotta Travel On,” Billy has lived up to his reputation as the “Gotta Travel On Boy”, maintaining a solid schedule of radio, stage, and television appearences around the world. His TV credits include the Ed Sullivan Show, the Dick Clark Show, three and one-half years on the Jimmy Dean Show and and guest appearences on on numerous others throughout the nation.

Landowners voting on the referendum for the formation of a sub-district fo rthe proposed Bear Creek Watershed of Clark and Scotland counties, voted 72 percent in favor of the formation of the sub-district, according to Jack Dunn, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors.

The Schileher Well Company of Donnellson, Iowa, has been secured by the city to sink several test wells southwest of the reserve resovoir near the light plantwith a view to determining whether an adequate amount of water to supply the city can be obtained through the use of wells.

Sgt. William G. Hollis, son of Mrs. Freda Hollis, Greensburg, has arrived on Okinawa to assume duties in the Far East Command. He is assigned at present as supply sergeant with Company H 29th Infantry Regiment a unit of the Army of Occupation of the Ruykyus Islands.

The Star Route from the east now arrives in Memphis at 5:15 pm and the evening train east arrives at 6:02 pm. For this reason, the pickup from the letter boxes around the square and at the courthouse will necessarily have to be made earlier than formerly if this mail is to be sent out either way in the evening and not lay over in Memphis until morning.
