Parents as Teachers is an international early childhood parent education and family support program serving families prenatally through kindergarten entry. This evidence-based program delivers parent education through personal visits and group meetings. Families are partnered with a certified parent educator to become equipped with the knowledge and support
needed to promote their child’s healthy growth and development, safety and their readiness to learn in the school setting.
Parent educators, Stephanie Shalley and Amanda Long, are excited to be able to connect with families again since the suspension of their in-home visits in March when the school shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, the Scotland County program will offer visits in-person or virtually, whichever is most comfortable for the participating family. In-person visits may be held indoors or out. During an inperson visit, parent educators will self-screen for symptoms prior to each visit, use hand sanitizer immediately before and after the visit, and wear a mask or face shield during indoor visits and for outdoor visits if close contact is likely.
Families will be contacted one day prior to the visit to review health screening questions. Materials used will be minimal this year and will likely be items that can be thoroughly
sanitized after the visit or left with the family. Families are asked to be truthful when answering the health screening questions. Adults should maintain a six-foot distance during the
visit. It is understandable that social distancing will be difficult for children. Children over two are encouraged to wear a mask. If anyone in the home has visited a COVID-19 hot spot, been in contact with someone who is positive for COVID-19 or is suspected to be positive, please postpone or choose virtual visiting for at least two weeks. All in-person visits will be temporarily suspended if Scotland County R-1 Schools suspend in-person classes due to COVID-19 or there is a local or state stay-at-home order.
Any parent interested in participating in this free learning program prenatally or for children newborn to kindergarten entry may call the Scotland County Elementary School at (660)465-8532 and you will be put in contact with a parent educator.
