Michael Joseph Shepard of Kirksville , Missouri passed away on August 23, 2020 at 12:30 P.M. at the University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. The son of Marguerite and Myron Shepard, he was born November 9, 1942 in Hurdland, Missouri. He graduated from Memphis High School with the class of 1960. Michael attended North East Missouri State Teachers College.
In November 1962 he joined the US Navy as an aviation cadet and was designated a Naval Officer and pilot in July 1964. In December of 1965 he married Lynda Peltier in Palatka, Florida, and to this marriage two sons, Stephen Michael and Stacy Christopher, were born.
Michael was designated a Patrol Plane Commander, Mission Commander and Instructor Pilot in both the P2V and P3C Patrol Aircraft and as an ASW Warfare Specialist. He was commanding Officer of the US Naval Facility, Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico. He served as a catapult and arresting gear officer on the USS Independence, CVA62. He retired on July 1, 1984.
Michael received a real estate license and worked in real estate from 1984 to 1988 in Florida.
In 1988 Michael returned to Missouri and operated a small farm near Downing. He was also the Executive Director for the Service Delivery Area 2 Private Industry Council which operated a welfare to a work program to sixteen counties in North East Missouri.
On June 28, 2008 Michael married Karen Waibel at the Willows north of Downing, MO.
Together they remodeled their home. They assisted in the Memphis High School 50+ annual reunion preparations. And they rebuilt a pontoon boat. They spent many hours fishing and boating on Forrest Lake at Kirksville, Missouri.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and brother’s Dr. Myron Eric Shepard (Linda) and Jon Patrick Shepard (Gail).
Survivors include sons: Stephen Michael (Liz) Maxville, Florida and Stacey Christopher (Pam) of Orange Park, Florida; grandsons, Tyler and Ryan also of Florida and nephews Michael William Shepard (Kate) of Omaha, Nebraska and Christopher Shepard.
Also surviving are his stepson Sean Waibel (Lanel) Memphis, Missouri, stepdaughter, Shani Waibel Bollin (Grant) of Navoo, IL, step granddaughter Ti Waibel of Muscatine, IA, step grandsons, Mitchell Bollin (Ashlie) and Devan Bollin of Nauvoo, IL,Brad Finley, and Kenneth Burns Jr. of Florida; and brother-in-law, Jodey Lancaster of Fernandina Beach, FL.
Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Brock Cemetery Association in care of Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, MO.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, 8/29/2020, at 11:00 A.M. at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis. Officiating the service was E. Richard Webber assisted by Pastor Leon Buford. Interment followed in the Brock Cemetery north of Memphis.
Pallbearers were Sean Waibel, Grant Bollin, Mitchell Bollin, Devan Bollin, Stephen Shepard, and Stacey Shepard.
