Auxiliary Makes Donation to Hospital for Teaching Kitchen FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The SCCC/SCH Auxiliary recently made a donation to both the Dietary Department and Therapy Services Department at Scotland County Hospital. Hospital Dietary Manager, Andrea Graham, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and Jennifer McMinn, Occupational Therapist, have a new area in the hospital with which to offer food preparation and dietary teaching in the newly built teaching kitchen. The goal with the new teaching kitchen is to expand food, culinary and nutrition literacy in a collaborative environment with both outpatients and inpatients, as both a nutritious food preparation appointment with Andrea and/or an occupational therapy session with Jennifer using adaptive kitchen accessories.
The food preparation accessories that the Auxiliary purchased were selected by Jennifer to meet the needs of patients with physical limitations to make food preparation more adaptive & enjoyable, therefore, improving nutrition for the patient. Andrea selected the appliances and portable island/workspace with the goal of hands-on cooking classes with patients and community classes on food education & nutritious meal preparation in the future.
This addition to the hospital is a benefit to the patients and the community members through classes and appointments in which participants will learn evidenced-based nutrition information, while using ergonomic kitchen accessories during occupational therapy appointments. The new teaching kitchen works to create a healthier community through one-on-one inpatient & outpatient nutrition counseling/teaching with adaptive kitchen accessories when needed for occupational therapy appointments.
The Auxiliary is a non-for-profit organization that raises money through sales at the Hospital Gift Shop (currently closed), Antique Days quilt raffle, pecan sales and Christmas Bazaar cookie sales. The Auxiliary meets every third Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Scotland County Care Center RCF Community Room (monthly meetings are cancelled until further notice). Membership dues are $1 annually and new members are always welcome.
