Scotland County fell behind early on Thursday night in Keosauqua, IA and the Lady Tigers were never able to recover as Van Buren cruised to a 58-3 victory to send SCR-I into the Christmas break on a down note.
The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Madie Bondurant got SCR-I on the scoreboard with a basket on an offensive rebound. Van Buren extended the lead to 11-2 forcing coach Cory Shultz to burn a timeout with 3:07 left in the first period.
Bondurant connected on a jumper and Khloe Hamlin scored on a drive to the rim to trim the deficit to 11-6.
Van Buren went on a 6-0 run before Kaylyn Anders scored in the paint early in the second period. A basket by Ashleigh Creek made the score 17-10. That was as close as Scotland County could get, as Van Buren answered with an 8-0 run before Julie Long connected on a three-pointer for the Lady Tigers. Van Buren then closed the first half on a 9-0 run to build a 34-13 lead at the intermission. Senior Riley Warner had a big first half, sinking six of eight shot attempts for 13 points to lead Van Buren.
Katie Feeney scored five straight points to start the third period but it wasn’t enough as Van Buren led 52-21 at the end of the third period.
Bondurant sank a three-pointer and added another jumper as SCR-I worked hard in the fourth period to try and shrink the margin. In the end Taryn Scheuermann was too much for SCR-I. The talented sophomore finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds while blocking 10 SCR-I shots in a dominating performance.
Bondurant led Scotland County in scoring with nine points and Creek finished with seven points. The loss drops Scotland County to 6-5 on the year.
