Lane Pence fights through the foul for two points in the win over Putnam County.

Scotland County claimed that elusive tourney trophy, topping Putnam County 68-47 to claim the championship of the Brashear Tournament on Saturday night.

After a slow start by both squads, SCR-I grabbed a 12-3 lead with 2:21 left in the opening frame when Elijah Cooley converted a three point play. But the Midgets responded with a 9-2 run before Sturgis Knupp scored in the paint for SCR-I to help hold the 14-12 lead.

Caleb Doubet wowed the crowd with a tough reverse lay in but the Tigers were unable to shake the Midgets. A fast break basket by Lane Pence gave SCR-I its biggest lead at 25-16, but Putnam County shrank the margin to 27-22 at the half.

SCR-I finally began to pull away in the third period. Knupp scored in the paint and added a fast break score. Freshman Will Fromm had a pair of field goals as well as the Tigers put together a 12-2 run to start the third period.

Elijah Cooley had a pair of scores before Caleb Doubet sank a jumper to beat the buzzer and put the Tigers on top 49-32 at the end of three periods of play.

Knupp continued a strong night with a pair of buckets on offensive rebounds. Fromm connected on a three-pointer and followed it up with a fast break score.  Lane Pence added  a pair of fourth quarter field goals as SCR-I ran away with the 68-47 victory to improve to 16-6 on the year.

Knupp led Scotland County with 19 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Fromm pitched in with 17 points and Pence finished with 10.
