Members of the Clopton High School Quiz Bowl team advanced to the semifinal round of the WGEM Academic Challenge Quiz Bowl Tournament with a 235 to 165 win over Scotland County High School on Saturday, February 16. This match was the third in a seven-part television series airing weekly on WGEM NBC, WGEM FOX and WGEM News Talk FM 105.1.
Members of the Clopton High School team include Danielle Illy, Damian Walker, Dylan Smith, Robert Rothbard, Shawn Yates, Kari Leake, Evan Lagemann and Avery Hall. The Clopton team is coached by Andy VanBebber.
Scotland County High School team members include Adam Slayton, Jacob Kapfer, Conner Harrison, Erica Yarbrough, Anna Triplett, Morgan Blessing, Zac Berhens and Corbin Kirchner. Scotland County is coached by Nathaniel Orr.
The next match between Quincy Notre Dame High School and Bushnell-Prairie High School will air Saturday February 23, at 6:30 p.m. on WGEM NBC and again Sunday, February 24, at 9:00 p.m. on WGEM FOX TV and at 10:30 p.m. on WGEM NBC. In addition, the match will air on WGEM News Talk FM 105.1 Saturday, February 23, at 10:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 24, at 7:00 a.m.
The WGEM Academic Challenge features 16 schools from the tri-state region competing in 15 matches. The host of this year’s tournament is WGEM Sports Director Tony Cornish Jr. The series is co-sponsored by John Wood Community College and WGEM.
Judges for the 2019 Academic Challenge are JWCC faculty members Melissa Knapp, assistant professor of mathematics; Mike Terry, chair and professor of language, literature and humanities; and Dr. Randy Wolfmeyer, assistant professor of engineering. The series is under the direction of Shawn Dickerman, marketing manager at WGEM.
