The Senior Stars Band originated in the mid 1980’s as the band began playing in area nursing homes and festivals in Northeast Missouri. Throughout the years as band members moved away or died, replacement members were recruited.
Currently the band plays classic old time music in nursing homes in Knox, Scotland and Lewis counties. Each nursing home has favorite songs. A few of the favorites include “You are My Sunshine”, “Wabash Cannon Ball”, “If You Knew Suzie”, “Down By the Riverside”, “Coming Around the Mountain”, Dark Town Strutters Ball” and “Old McDonald”. The band members are excited as they listen to the residents singing along songs they remember.
The present band members consist of singer, Audrey Dent; banjo/guitar, Jim Dent; Margaret Parrish and Nina McKinzie, piano/keyboard; drummer, Beverly Hamilton and singer/harmonica, Maynard Blackwood.
Maynard serves as the M.C. and is the oldest longevity member. The Senior Stars play date at the Scotland County Nursing Home is usually the third Thursday each month.
