Brock Durflinger eyes a three-pointer in action versus La Plata.

Scotland County could not buy a bucket early on in Wednesday night’s semifinals action at the North Shelby Tournament and the slow start doomed SCR-I in a 56-32 defeat.

La Plata raced out to a 9-0 lead before Parker Triplett sank a jumper for the Tigers. The deficit swelled to 17-2 before Will Fromm scored on a drive to the paint. A three-pointer by Jared Dunn cut the deficit to 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.

SCR-I’s scoring struggles carried over into the second quarter. After Fromm scored on an offensive rebound to start the period, La Plata went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 26-9. Kaden Anders scored in the paint for the only other field goal of the first half for the Tigers as SCR-I went to the locker room down 29-11 at the intermission.

Scotland County showed some life in the third period. Triplett sank a jumper and Dunn connected again from behind the three-point line. After Anders drew a charge on defense, Fromm scored on an offensive rebound. The senior then converted on the fast break to pull SCR-I within 31-23 and force a La Plata timeout with 3:19 left in the quarter.

The stoppage worked for the Bulldogs, who answered with a 10-0 run to regain control of the contest. Matthew Woods scored in the paint to end the period but La Plata held a 41-25 lead.

SCR-I was unable to mount a final rally, as a bucket by Kaleb Parkins and two free throws by Fromm were the lone fourth quarter tallies as La Plata went on to the 56-32 win.

Tel Wheeler led all scorers with 25 points for La Plata. Fromm led SCR-I in scoring with 10 points and Triplett and Dunn each finished with six. The Tigers dropped to 3-10 on the year.
