A trio of Scotland County track athletes traveled to Centralia Saturday for the Class 2 Sectional 1 track finals. Loren Smith-Roberts was the lone Lady Tigers to post a top four finish at the district championships and advance to sectionals. Zach Miller and Lucas Howard represented the Tigers.
Miller kept his 2012 track season alive for one final race. The junior posted a top four finish in the 100 meter dash to qualify as one of 16 finalists for the state championships in Jefferson City.
Miller advanced in a photo finish, narrowly edging North Bloomfield Colton Carrier for the fourth and final spot. Both runners crossed the finish line in 11.47 seconds. Christian Brune, a senior from Fatima, won the race in a time of 11.05 seconds. Taquan Kelly of Macon was second in 11.43 seconds followed by Walker Boghardt, a freshman from California in a time of 11.46 seconds.
Brune and Carrier also qualified for the state finals in the 200-meter dash while Miller finished seventh. Brune won the race in 22.13 seconds. Rhett Cook of Schuyler County was second in 22.69 seconds followed by Carrier in 22.93 seconds and Anthony Price, a junior from California in 22.97 seconds. Miller’s final time was 23.96 seconds.
Howard failed to advance in the 300-meter hurdles. The sophomore finished seventh in a time of 42.43 seconds. Andrew Baum, a senior from Brookfield, won the race in a time of 40.76 seconds. Cody Alexander, a senior from Cuba was second in 40.93 seconds followed by Ben Cooper, a senior from Blair Oaks (41.19 seconds) and Skylar Baird, a junior from South Shelby (41.61 seconds).
Smith-Roberts finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 102’03”. Lauren Allen, a senior from Fatima, won the event with a throw of 128’09”. Amy Dorge, a junior from Blair Oaks was second at a distance of 127’2″ followed by Haley Heuer, a junior from Harrisburg (116’7″) and Kelsey Benoit, a senior from Centralia (111’02”).
The SCR-I senior also finished sixth in the shot put. Benoit won the event with a throw of 44’1.25″. Lexie Wilt, a senior from South Shelby was second (40’11”) followed by Allen (40′) and Heuer (39’1″). Smith’s best toss on the day was 36’10”.
Brune helped Fatima win the boys sectional title with 100 total points. the senior won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and anchored the winning 4×400-meter relay team and was part of the second place 2×200 meter relay team, advancing him to compete in four events at state. Blair Oaks won the women’s class 2 sectional title with a total of 94 points.
