At the May 1st Memphis City Council meeting the board of aldermen finalized a contract for a land purchase that will expand Johnson Park.
The city has agreed to purchase 0.66 acres at the south edge of the park from Jessica Sevier for a purchase price of $15,000. The closing date for the deal will be June 30th.
The adjoining portion of the park is utilized for sand volleyball leagues, leaving it open to the city to expand the offering.
Park Director Chris Harris has been working with various civic groups regarding additional shelters and other building upgrades at the park that could improve offerings for the community and ultimately could be incorporated on the new ground as well.
Other new offerings being considered for the park include disk golf, soccer, flag football, batting cages and ice skating, which could all be incorporated with the additional space made available by the expansion.
