Kaitlyn McMinn reaches first safely as the throw gets away from the Novinger defender during first round action in the district tourney.

After a bit of a slow start, Scotland County ramped up its efforts on Wednesday night in Memphis to dispatch Novinger 17-1 and advance to the semifinals of the Class 1 District 11 softball tournament in Memphis.

Kaitlyn McMinn got the start for SCR-I as Coach Cory Shultz elected to rest #1 pitcher Ashleigh Creek. The sophomore struck out the side in the first inning.

But the Lady Tigers got off to a slow start on offense. Kaylyn Anders was hit by a pitch. She scored on a wild pitch to give SCR-I a 1-0 lead.

Novinger’s defense faltered in the second inning as a trio of errors helped open the door for a big inning for Scotland County. Abby Blessing delivered an RBI single and Creek, who was serving as the designated hitter, added a two-run single. Kylee Stott plated two more runs with a base hit to extend the SCR-I lead to 8-0.

A pair of errors allowed Novinger to trim the deficit to 8-1 in the top of the third inning.

Scotland County ended the contest in the fourth inning with nine more runs. Creek started the rally with a base on balls. Singles by Stevi See and Khloe Hamlin  led to the first run. Stott delivered her second two-run single before a trio of Novinger errors let three more runs cross the plate. See ended the night with a walk-off two run single that made the final tally 17-1.

McMinn picked up the win, going four innings and allowing just one unearned run on no hits and one walk while striking out nine.

See went 3-4 with two RBIs. Stott was 2-4 with four RBIs and Blessing went 1-3 with three RBIs.
