Despite it being their first game in more than two weeks, the Scotland County Lady Tigers didn’t miss a beat on Tuesday night in Memphis, blasting La Plata 64-45 to ring in the New Year in style. The big win was even more impressive considering SCR-I was without starter Maddie Brassfield who was attending a funeral, and top reserve Anna Monroe, who injured an ankle in the December 20th game at Harmony.
Kassie Bulen got the Lady Tigers off to a good start. She found a wide-open Ashleigh Creek for a bucket with a nice pass before finding herself on the receiving end of a Creek assist. The senior put her team up 8-2 with a bucket on an offensive rebound. Abi Feeney then stole the in-bounds pass and scored to make it 10-1 and force a quick La Plata timeout.
The excellent ball movement continued for SCR-I as Calesse Bair found Creek open inside for a field goal. Bair then sank a pair of free throws before connecting from behind the arc.
Feeney finished off a torrid first quarter with a three-point play to give the Lady Tigers a 21-10 lead.
Creek continued a solid first half with a bucket in the paint before Chelsea Wood took over. The junior forward converted a three-point play in the paint and scored on an assist by Bair. She then made a steal on defense and went coast-to-coast for the bucket. Wood closed out a monster second quarter with another three-point play on an offensive rebound to give SCR-I a 40-24 lead at the intermission.
It was Bair’s turn in the third period. She dished another assist to Wood before taking over the scoring. The junior guard converted a three-point play on the fast break. She followed it up with two more transition buckets, the latter being another three-point play as the lead grew to 50-26 with 3:40 left in the period.
After Feeney knocked down a jumper and Bulen scored on the fast break, Bair put the exclamation mark on the night with a three-pointer to make the score 57-26 heading into the fourth period. Avery Whitaker connected from behind the arc and freshmen Nova Cline and Kaylyn Anders got some varsity experience as the Lady Tigers cruised to the 64-45 victory.
Bair finished with 16 points to lead a balanced Scotland County attack. Wood added 15 points while Feeney finished with 13. Creek posted nine points and Bulen added seven as SCR-I improved to 9-1 on the season..
