Jon Childers, 72, of Eagan, MN, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019, following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Jon was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1947 in Ottumwa, Iowa.   He grew up on the family farm four miles northwest of Rutledge, MO, with his parents and grandparents, learned farming from his Dad and through FFA, and remained involved in the care and management of the farm until his death.

Jon began his education at Hendricks one room country school. At its closing, he attended and graduated eighth grade at Rutledge R-IV grade school.  Jon graduated from Scotland County R-I High School in 1965, then attended the University of Missouri, where he attained a Mathematics degree.  Following graduation, he taught high school math, but soon decided his real passion was more inclined toward art, photography, and architecture.   This led him to a degree in architecture from Kansas State.  From there, Jon began a long career working as an architect for the U.S.D.A., the Federal Housing Administration and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Jon and his wife, Jan (Tokarz), made their home in Eagan, MN, where Jan was a nurse and Jon worked for the Federal Government.   Jon was a member of the Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan, being a life-long Methodist in faith and in living, where he always had a method and a right and best way to do everything!

Jon’s architectural skills were also applied in the design and building of their home in Eagan and then in building a cabin in northern Minnesota.  It was there, on the north shore of Lake Superior,  that he loved spending time with his family and friends.
In retirement, Jon continued with his creative abilities, as he taught pottery classes at the Eagan Art House and made, sold, and gave as gifts, many beautiful pieces of pottery.   In addition, he always had a camera close at hand, (sometimes to the annoyance of friends and relatives!), as he captured on film as many of life’s moments as he could.

Jon is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jan; son, Jason Meeuwen; daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Schultz) Meeuwen; grandsons, Garrett and Isaac Childers Meeuwen of Belle Plaine, MN; his aunt and uncle Barbara (Padgett) and Roger Briggs of Rushville, IL, and many other relatives & friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents JP and Mary Evelyn (Padgett) Childers, his uncles and aunts – Jacquelyn(Padgett) and Joe Neese, Clifford and LeGene Padgett,, and David and Pauline Padgett.

Services were held at Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan, MN, on Sunday, August 4, 2019.  Jon was laid to rest with a graveside service at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 7th, at the Memphis Cemetery at Memphis, MO, officiated by Pastor Sonny Smyser of Lancaster, MO.   Casket bearers were grandsons, Garrett and Isaac Childers Meeuwen, Leroy Huff, Sean Huff, Jamie Triplett, and Robert Neese.  Local arrangements were handled by Payne Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are preferred and suggested to The Lymphoma Society, Cancer Care Center at Regions Hospital, or Advent U.M.C. in Eagan, MN, and may be left with Payne Funeral Chapel.
