An ice fishing outing for a Scotland County couple turned tragic on February 17th when the husband and wife fell through the ice.

According to the Missouri State Water Patrol, Judith E. Boyer, 75, died following the accident, which occurred at 3:20 p.m. on the family farm, near Route A, two miles south of Arbela.

Investigators indicated that Judy fell through the ice, and when her husband Ronnie moved to rescue her, he also fell through the ice. His continued efforts to rescue his wife were unsuccessful, before he finally was able to get himself out of the water and call for help.

Officers from the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol were joined by the Scotland County Ambulance Service and the Gorin and Scotland County fire departments in rescue efforts.

Judy Boyer was recovered from the water and transported to Scotland County Hospital in Memphis where she was pronounced deceased at 5:25 p.m. by Dr. Steve Terrill.

Ronnie Boyer was transported to the hospital by law enforcement for treatment of hypothermia.
