Emma Balfour Smith, age 90, of Memphis, MO, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015, in the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.
She was born March 11, 1925, in La Praire, Illinois, the daughter of John Truman and Mae Harrington Balfour.
Emma was born in Illinois and moved with her family to Oklahoma during the depression. She attended school in Clayton, IL and graduated high school at Rutledge, MO. Her mother passed away when she was seven years old. She grew up in West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri. She had a great work ethic, enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family. She especially liked working in Yellowstone National Park and Death Valley Park. Emma attended the Church of Christ at Memphis, MO.
Surviving are her daughter Billie (Jim) Nytes of North Dakota, her grandchildren, Cris (Rebbecca) Behrens of Salt Lake, Utah, Sheila Remley of Arbela, MO, Jaye Curran of Quincy, IL, Kim (Bobby) Fink of Iowa, Garrett (Jane) Curran of Shenzen, China, Nicky (Arash) Farahar of Champaign, IL, Lucas (Stacey) Remley of Memphis, MO, Tara (Craig) Friar of Wellington, CO, Jesse (Crystal) Behrens of Longmont, CO, Lacey (Adam) Hulme of Loveland, CO, Brandi (Eric) Glass of Memphis, MO, a family friend and caregiver Karen Norton of Memphis, MO and 22 great- grandchildren.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, daughters Sandra Remley and Patricia Reed, five sisters, Helen Virginia and Mildred Jeannette Balfour in infancy, Margaret Adams, Letha Florence McPherson, and Loretta Walters, four brothers, Russell, Joseph, Herschel and Larry Balfour, one niece and four nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 25, 2015, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. Dr. Jeffrey Davis officiated the services. Burial was in Mt. Horeb Cemetery near Golden, IL.
Music was recorded selections and “Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes by her grandson Jesse Behrens.
Casket bearers were Cris Behrens, Jesse Behrens, Lucas Remley, Jaye Curran, Craig Friar and Eric Glass.
Visitation was held on Friday, July 24, 2015, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.
