Elton Claire Shelley passed away December 31, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Lorin and Pearl Shelley September 3, 1925. In 1929, he saw the Graf Zeppelin fly over his family farm on route back to New York. Living through the depression, he became a crack shot with a .22 rifle and often brought home small game from nearby woods for family food. He helped his dad farm using horse drawn machinery. His dad didn’t have his first tractor until the end of World War II.
Elton graduated from high school in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in South Korea close to the 38th parallel. His group constructed an airbase along an abandoned Japanese paved runway. With excellent typing skills, he was a supply sergeant.
He loved airplanes. His unit serviced planes such as P51 Mustang, B-25’s and DC-3. He enjoyed the humor of South Korean children. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
He met and married Wanda B. Humphrey on May 23, 1948. They had a son, Daryl. Following his military service he resumed farming. He loved hunting and fishing. The family moved to Pocatello, ID in 1957. He worked for the UPRR, then he went to work for Simplot and retired in 1989.
After his wife’s retirement as a beautician, they traveled the US by motorcycle to all of the lower 48 states. They spent winters in Texas and Arizona.
Elton was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald and his wife, Wanda. He is survived by his son, Daryl (wife Carol) and grandson Skylar Shelley.
Memorial services will be held at Calvary Chapel, 1633 Olympus Drive in Pocatello, ID at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018.
