A number of Vietnam War veterans from the Downing area recently took part in the Great River Honor Flight #48 to Washington D.C. in June.

Jim Brewer, Mike Jackson, and Jerry Duncan accompanied by guardians Matthew and Aaron Brewer and Kevin Harrolson attended the flight along with former Downing resident Donnie Middleton, and his guardian, Andy Middleton.

The group toured the Vietnam Wall, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial and viewed the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery. They also viewed the Air Force Memorial overlooking the Pentagon and received a bus tour of Washington D.C.

The men were humbled by the 250 plus people shaking their hands and thanking them for their service throughout out the tour. It proved a memorable experience, capped off with family and friends gathering to greet them upon their return to Quincy, IL at a welcome home assembly.
