While Scotland County threw out five Brookfield runners at home plate, it ended up being the Lady Tigers who had more trouble crossing the plate enough as the Bulldogs ended SCR-I’s day in round two of the Schuyler County Tourney Saturday with a 6-3 defeat.
Brookfield chased starter Kylee Stott in the first inning. After surrendering a leadoff homer, the sophomore walked four of the next five batters. forcing Coach Kim Small to make a change. Kaitlyn McMinn relieved and got a force out at home to end the threat down just 2-0.
Brookfield tacked on a run in the top of the second to lead 3-0.
SCR-I trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the second. Stott singled and moved into scoring position on a hit by Khloe Hamlin. Julie Long plated the run with a ground out.
After Brookfield scored in the top of the third, SCR-I got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Katie Feeney hit a ground rule double and scored on a base hit by Kaylyn Anders to make the score 4-2.
Brookfield extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth. The rally was ended by a nice defensive play as Long ran down a double in right field. She hit Hamlin on the cutoff and the senior fired a dart to third base where Hannah Feeney tagged out the runner to end the inning.
SCR-I dodged more potential scores in the fifth inning, getting out of a bases loaded jam by making all three outs at home plate.
Katie Feeney crushed a solo home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 6-3.
Stott took the loss for SCR-I, surrendering two runs on one hit and four walks in one third of an inning. McMinn pitched six and two thirds innings of relief, allowing four runs, two earned, on 10 hits.
Katie Feeney was 2-4 with two runs scored and her 2nd homer of the year. Stott went 2-3 with a run scored.
The loss dropped the Lady Tigers record to 6-8 on the year.
