The bar is always set high at the Missouri state track championships, but that literally was the case for Scotland County’s lone representative.
Junior Abby Blessing went into the Class 2 high jump finals facing a tall task. The SCR-I junior advanced with a fourth place finish at the Sectional 4 meet, meaning she was just one of 16 athletes left standing in Class 2.
Unfortunately Blessing was unable to make it to the podium. After clearing 4 feet 9 inches at sectionals, she was unable to match the height at Jefferson City, having to settle for 4′ 8 which left her in 16th place.
Kelly Lewis of Licking captured the state championship. The sophomore cleared 5’4 to claim the crown. Lainy Williams of Cole Camp was second and Jaylea Bixenman of Marceline, the Sectional 4 champ, finished third, both at heights of 5’3. Jenna Shipley of Adrian was fourth and Keara Johnson of Caruthersville was fifth. All of the top five finishers were underclassmen, like Blessing, setting the stage of some repeat performances in 2019.
Connor Watkins a senior from Charleston, Mackenzie Brown a sophomore from Carrollton and Remi Pittman, a senior from Adrian filled out the podium as the sixth, seventh and eighth place finishers.
