A Baring man was seriously injured on Wednesday morning when the tanker truck he was driving ran off the roadway and overturned. The accident occurred at 6:45 a.m. on Highway 15, five miles south of Memphis.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, John M. Tarpein, 66, sustained serious injuries when the 2015 Freightliner he was driving northbound on Highway 15 ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Tarpein was transported by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Hospital in Memphis and then transferred to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Fire and Rescue, Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, the ambulance service and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The crash caused a discharge of fuel from the tanker, which forced the road to be closed much of the morning for clean-up efforts. Traffic was restored to one lane as the clean-up efforts continued into the afternoon and evening hours.
