Barbara Mathes, 79, of Lebanon, Missouri, formerly of Memphis, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 15, 2018 at Springfield, Missouri. The daughter of Buford and Bessie “Baird” Bissell, she was born September 12, 1939 in Scotland County, Missouri.

She married George Mathes on November 6, 1987. They enjoyed each other’s company for over 31 years.

She was spunky and had some orneriness to her. Barbara loved to dance, especially the jitterbug, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going out for coffee time with friends, cooking dinners for family gatherings and babysitting most of her life. She claimed her babysitting kids and their families as her own.

She had the most welcoming soul on this earth. She made anybody and everybody feel welcome. No one ever felt inferior around her, everyone was family! God has his angels on this earth, and she was one. She had a way of making people know they were always a part of the family and you never felt like an outsider.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Buford Bissell, Bessie and Herb Alexander, her sons, Jerry Rae Newcomer and Randy Neal Newcomer, two granddaughters, Billie Newcomer and Tara Newcomer along with her brothers, Bob Bissell and Donald Alexander.

Survivors include her husband: George Mathes of Lebanon, Missouri; five children: Rhonda, (Brian) Lewis, Rick Newcomer, Cindy Compton, Ginger (Barry) Stott and Tina (John) Riesinger; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Betty (John) Wheeler, Dorothy (Bob) Hunolt, Karen (Orie) Muench and Verna (Laverne) Weilbrenner; one brother: Boyd (Jeanie) Bissell, along with nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
