With six players approaching double-digits in scoring on the night, Scotland County’s offense helped fuel a big 71-46 victory over Marion County in the opening round of the North Shelby Tournament on Wednesday.

The game, played a day later than originally scheduled due to Tuesday’s snowstorm, pitted the #4 seed Tigers versus the #5 Mustangs. SCR-I pulled away in the first period behind a hot start by Aaron Buford. The junior point guard poured in 13 points. Lane Pence came off the bench and scored six first quarter points as the Tigers jumped out to a 21-7 lead.

Brandon Shultz did his best to bring Marion County back, scoring 14 of his game-high 26 points in the second period. But SCR-I held the rest of the team to just a single tally to keep the lead at 35-22 at the half.

Scotland County heated up from long range in the third period. Gage Dodge, Caleb Doubet and  Will Fromm all connected on three-pointers as the Tigers went on a 19-10 run to blow the game open.

Zach Doubet and Sturgis Knupp each had a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter as SCR-I went to work in the paint to preserve the lead. SCR-I outscored the Mustangs 17-14 in the final eight minutes to post the 71-46 victory.

Buford led Scotland County in scoring with 16 points. Zach Doubet finished with 11 points and also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots. Dodge added nine points while Knupp and Fromm finished with nine points and Pence added eight.

Scotland County improves to 10-3 with the victory and advances to play Marceline in the semifinals.
