Eric Greitens, Missouri’s 56th Governor, was sworn in on the South Steps of the Capitol on Monday, January 9th, 2017. SCR-1 sophomore, Adam Slayton, was there! “It was such an amazing experience,” exclaimed Adam, who admits he would definitely go again.
Adam’s aunt, Joan Morris, took him to Jefferson City the day of the Inauguration. The Swearing-In Ceremony took place at 11:30 that morning and from there, Adam went to the Governor’s Mansion where he went through the Receiving Line and shook hands with Governor Greitens and the First Lady. He also attended the James C. Kirkpatrick State Information Center for the Inauguration Open House of Missouri Secretary of State, Jay Ashcroft. While there, he met former Attorney General for the George W. Bush Administration, John Ashcroft. The evening concluded with the Inaugural Ball at the Capitol Rotunda.
Adam credits his first political influence to Mr. Colvin, SCR-1 high school history and government instructor. Mr. Colvin was Adam’s sixth grade campus bowl coach. Since then, Adam’s interest in politics has grown and his loyalty is to the Republican Party. He has read Georg W. Bush’s autobiography as well as the book he wrote about his father titled, “A Portrait of My Father”. He has also read John McCain’s autobiography. Adam also stays current on politics by watching C-SPAN.
As a sophomore, Adam is currently taking American Government. His plans after high school are to continue his education as a Political Science major, though he hasn’t decided where he will attend school yet.
Adam keeps very busy in school. He is a member of FFA where he serves as the Chapter Parliamentarian. He is also this year’s Student Council Treasurer, a member of FBLA, and a member of the Varsity Campus Bowl Team. Additionally, Adam is a long-time member of the Boy Scouts where he is getting ready to become a Life Rank member.
Adam’s latest political endeavor is to become a Senate Page. He is just starting the application process and hopes to serve as a Page this summer.
