Big 4th Quarter Helps Lady Tigers Get By Green City 41-30

Randi Slaughter puts up the runner in the lane over the Green City defenders during first half action on Wednesday night at the Novinger Tournament.

A big fourth quarter helped Scotland County overcome Green City and advance to the Novinger Tournament championship game for the sixth straight year. A big night from Randi Slaughter helped the Lady Tigers down the Hornets 41-30.

Green City took an early 4-0 lead before Chelsea Wood connected on a free-throw line jumper. Slaughter followed with a three-pointer to give Scotland County a lead it would never relinquish.

Wood scored on an offensive rebound and fellow freshman Calesse Bair followed that with a field goal in the paint to extend the lead to 9-4.

Wood added another bucket in the paint before Green City rallied to trim the lead to 11-10. Kassie Bulen gave Scotland County some breathing room with a field goal to make the score 13-10 at the end of the first period.

SCR-I dealt with foul trouble in the second period as Bair went to the bench with three personals. Slaughter scored on a drive to the basket and followed with a three pointer. A jumper by Maddie Brassfield made the score 20-14 at the half.

The offense was hard to come by in the third quarter. The lone points for Scotland County came on a three pointer by Slaughter with 4:22 left in the third quarter. That allowed Green City to pull within 23-20 with eight minutes to play.

Slaughter extended the cushion with a three pointer to open the fourth period. Bair made the score 28-22 with a score on rebound with 5:43 remaining to play.

Wood put Green City on the ropes just seconds later as she made a steal on the defensive end and went coast-to-coast for the lay in and was fouled. She completed the three-point play before Kylee Johnston and Chelsea Burkhiser followed with field goals on the next two possessions to blow the contest open with a 35-22 margin as Scotland County rolled to the win.

Slaughter led all scorers with 18 points as SCR-I improved to 2-1 on the season. Wood finished with nine points.
