Second-Half Shooting Woes Topple Tigers in Season Debut

The 2013-14 basketball season could not have started much better for the Scotland County Tigers, who jumped out to a 15-2 lead over Clark County on Tuesday night in Kahoka. However SCR-I fans will be looking for a better finish, as turnovers plagued the Tigers much of the second half, allowing the Indians to rally for a 47-37 victory.

Early on, the Tigers were hitting on all cylinders. Brice Cowell scored on a drive to the basket off the opening tipoff and SCR-I looked poised to roll. Lucas Howard converted on a move in the paint before Jacob Blessing knocked down a three pointer to make the score 7-2.

Bailey Johnston kept the Tiger fans thrilled as he swatted a pair of Clark County shot attempts on the defensive end.

Cowell converted a three-point play followed by a bucket from Howard in the paint. A three-pointer by Cordie Kigar extended the lead to 15-2 before Clark County finally got its second field goal of the contest to end the first period trailing 15-4.

Zach Doubet made a steal on defense to start the second period and converted on the offensive end to keep the Tigers throttle at full speed. Unfortunately, the Indians switched to a full-court press that slowed down SCR-I. Clark County trimmed the deficit to 17-12 before Cowell canned a three-pointer with 4:18 on the clock. Kigar followed with a basket on the fast break and then made one of two free throw attempts to extend the lead to 23-15.

Clark County responded with a 5-0 run as turnovers continued to take their toll on the Tigers.

Kigar ended the run with a three-pointer but Clark County closed out the first half with the final four points to leave Scotland County's lead at a single bucket at 26-24.

The Indians tied the game with a bucket to start the period before two free throws by Howard put the Tigers ahead 28-26. It would be the last lead of the night for Scotland County as the offense went cold and SCR-I was blanked the remainder of the third period.

Clark County was equally as challenged on offense, scoring just two points during the six minute defensive battle before Chase Bevans hit a three-pointer for Clark County and followed up with a jumper to beat the buzzer and put the Indians on top 33-28 heading into the fourth period.

Bevans continued to have the hot hand in the fourth period as the home team extended the lead to 38-28 with 6:03 left to play.

SCR-I simply could not buy a field goal. Turnovers combined with the cold shooting simply would not allow a SCR-I rally to get off the ground.

Blessing made a pair of free throws as did Kigar to trim the deficit back to single digits. After free throws by Johnston and Blessing, Jade Holt converted a steal and layup to cut the lead to 43-37 with 1:36 left in the contest. That was the lone field goal of the second half for the Tigers. SCR-I went scoreless the remainder of the game as Clark County prevailed 47-37.

Kigar led Scotland County in scoring with 11 points. Cowell finished with eight points and Blessing had seven.
