Tigers Celebrate Homecoming with 34-12 Win Over North Shelby

Caleb Doubet returns an intercetption down the sideline in front of an excited Scotland County bench during the Tigers Homecoming victory on Friday night.

A potent Scotland County offense was hampered by turnovers on Friday night but the Tigers still had plenty of firepower to help celebrate a 34-12 homecoming victory over North Shelby.

SCR-I had its worst turnover total of the season, losing three fumbles as well as an interception, which allowed the undermanned North Shelby squad to make a game of it in the first half.

The Tigers took the opening kickoff and Chris Jackson gave the team excellent field position with a solid return. The senior running back teamed up with Will McRobert to quickly move the ball into scoring position with a pair of first down runs by each back.

But a personal foul backed up the Tigers forcing the team to turn to the air. Jade Holt connected with Ian See for a 36 yard touchdown pass with 8:49 to play in the first period. McRobert ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0.

The Raiders quickly put the SCR-I defense on its heals with a pair of first down passes. But SCR-I responded. Lucas Howard and Jed Troutman made tackles for loss which ultimately forced a punt.

Scotland County went three and out and punted the ball back to the Raiders, setting the table for a scoring drive. John Arnett capped off the drive with an eight-yard TD run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving SCR-I on top 8-6 with 10.7 seconds in the first quarter.

Jackson again gave the Tigers good field position with a kick return across midfield. It took SCR-I all of two minutes to add to the lead. McRobert moved the chains before a Holt pass to Jackson put the ball in scoring position, McRobert found the end zone on an 11-yard run at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter to make the score 14-6.

North Shelby answered right back less than a minute later when Arnett broke a 59-yard TD run with 9:07 left in the first half. Chester Robinson made a big play to stop the two-point conversion to keep the Tigers on top 14-12.

The scoreboard continued to light up as SCR-I extended the margin courtesy of Jackson. He broke a 41 yard run and two plays later scored on a four-yard scamper to make the score 20-12 with 7:11 remaining in the second period.

The Tigers kept the momentum as Caleb Doubet picked off a Jacob Rich pass and returned it down the sideline to midfield.

But the turnover bug bit the Tigers, as a Raider defender stripped the ball from Jackson forcing a fumble.

SCR-I's defense remedied the turnover, stuffing the Raiders and forcing a punt, which set up the final SCR-I tally of the first half.

With just seconds on the clock, Holt rolled out and in the face of a big North Shelby rush, delivered a perfect pass down field, taking a big hit after releasing the throw. Jackson out jumped the North Shelby defender and somehow was able to keep his balance and roll off the pile and scamper the remaining distance for the 43-yard TD with just 2.2 seconds left. The two point conversion failed, leaving the score at 26-12 at the intermission.

The two teams traded punts to open the third period before the Tigers put together an apparent scoring drive. But the momentum was upended at the two-yard line, literally when Jackson was hit low and went end over end in the air, landing awkwardly on his head and shoulder, resulting in the ball coming lose. Despite the rule that the ground cannot cause a fumble, North Shelby was given possession on the fumble.

The SCR-I defense held and forced a North Shelby punt.

That set up the only scoring drive of the second half as Cordie Kigar broke a 33-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth period. Jackson ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 34-12.

SCR-I (3-2) racked up more than 400 yards of total offense behind the balanced one, two punch of Jackson and McRobert. Jackson had 152 yards and a TD on 12 carries. McRobert ran the ball 24 times for 151 yards and a TD. Kigar finished with 40 yards and a TD on two carries.

Holt completed four of seven passes for 73 yards and two scores. Jackson had two grabs for 50 yards and a TD while See caught the other TD pass.

Arnett led North Shelby (0-5) with 79 yards rushing on 23 carries. Rich completed six of 17 passes for 59 yards.
