SCR-I Shuts Out South Shelby to Move to 2-0

Chelsea Wood slides in safely at third base during the Lady Tigers 1-0 victory over South Shelby in Shelbina on September 3rd.

After pounding out 10 runs in the season-opener, the Scotland County softball team turned to pitching and defense to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over South Shelby in Shelbina on September 3rd.

The Lady Tigers let a scoring opportunity get away in the top of the first inning. Randi Slaughter walked to lead off the inning. A pair of South Shelby errors loaded the bases, but the Lady Birds gunned down a runner at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

Bethany Rader worked out of a key jam in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Tigers' first error of the season allowed a runner to reach third with just one out. But Rader struck out the next two batters to erase the threat.

Singles by Rader and Miranda Holland gave SCR-I a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the third but Bailey Fohey was able to work out of the jam.

Rader did similar work in the bottom of the frame, stranding a pair of Lady Birds on base as the game remained scoreless.

Scotland County finally broke on top in the fifth inning. Slaughter led off with a single and stole second base. She came in to score on an RBI single by Rader to make the score 1-0.

Rader made that lead hold up, despite a seventh inning scare. South Shelby had back-to-back two-out singles in the final at bat, before Slaughter gunned down the final out at first base on a ground out to shortstop to seal the shutout.

Rader improved to 2-0, pitching the complete game shutout. She surrendered seven hits in seven innings of work but did not walk a batter while striking seven. She also went 2-3 at the plate with the lone RBI of the night.

Slaughter was 1-3 with a stolen base and run scored. Holland and Claire Shannan had the other SCR-I hits as Foley only allowed five singles on the night. She was the hard luck loser, surrendering the lone run on five hits and one walk while striking out five.
