Howard, Miller Advance to Track Sectionals but 2013 Season Ends for Lady Tigers

Two Scotland County runners advanced to the Class 2 Sectional 2 track meet with strong showings at the Class 2 District 4 track meet in Fayette on May 4th while the Lady Tigers season came to a close.
Zach Miller and Lucas Howard moved on to represent the Tigers in the sport's version of the state semi-finals courtesy of top four finishes in district competition.
Zach Miller claimed the district title in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.57 seconds. Logan Prewitt of Clark County was second in 11.67 seconds and Milan's Mason Thompson was third.
Prewitt turned the tables on Miller in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line first, forcing Miller to settle for second place. Laine Sly of Highland was third with Dakota Lewis of Marceline also qualifying for sectionals.
Miller advanced in a third competition, taking third place in the 200-meter dash. Thompson took top honors in 23.55 seconds followed by Prewitt in 23.71 seconds. Miller's qualifying time was 23.93 seconds. Preston Harlan of Putnam County was fourth in 24.21 seconds.
Miller came up short in his bid to advance in all four events after a tough day in the long jump pit. The senior scratched on four of his five efforts, with his only qualifying jump coming in at 19' 2.25", which was good for seventh place.
Teammate Lucas Howard earned second place in the long jump, clearing 20' 5.5". Zane Lockhart of Paris won the event with a leap of 21' 4.5". Also qualifying were Dalton Shively of Schuyler County and Taylor Thompson of Monroe City.
Howard also advanced to sectionals with a third place run in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 15.82 seconds trailed only Van Windsor of South Shelby (15.44 seconds) and Brennen Floray of Marceline (15.58 seconds).
Howard earned second place in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 42.52 seconds. Skylar Baird of South Shelby won the race in 42.58 seconds. Also qualifying for sectionals were Lockhart and Floray.
It was nearly four-for-four for the junior, but Howard missed by one spot advancing in the triple jump, finishing fifth overall with a distance of 40' 5". Lockhart won the event with Windsor taking third. Kyle Fulton of Monroe City was second and Ryan Mayes of South Shelby was fourth.
As a team, SCR-I finished sixth at districts with 52 points. Monroe City claimed the team title with 120 points followed by South Shelby (83), Clark County (82), Palmyra (60) and Marceline (53). The Tigers finished ahead of Highland, Milan, Fayette, Paris, Putnam County, Schuyler County, Brookfield, Harrisburg, Father Tolton Regional Catholic and Westran.
The Lady Tigers finished 13th in the 16 team field and failed to advance any athletes on to sectionals.
TRC MVP Randi Slaughter finished seventh in the triple jump. Miranda Holland was seventh in the shot put.
The 4x800 relay team of Shai'lyn Brush, Leah Terrill, Renay Friendshuh and Kylee Johnston finished fifth.
Terrill finished sixth in the 3,200 meter run.
The 4x400 relay team of Karissa Adams, Johnston, Brush and Slaughter finished seventh.
Palmyra won the girls district title with 117 team points. Brookfield was second followed by Monroe City, Marceline and Westran.
