Tigers Overcome Milan Rally to Win in Final At Bat

Catcher Tyler Buford fires a throw to first base to gun down a Milan batter during Thursday's home victory for the Tigers.

An early 4-0 lead disappeared late for the Scotland County baseball team on Thursday night but the Tigers rallied to beat Milan 5-4 in Memphis.

It looked like a pitching duel early on as Cordie Kigar kept the Wildcats in check through four innings of work.

SCR-I final got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Jacob Blessing singled but was forced out on a fielder's choice by Kigar. Austin Thrasher blasted a double to deep left field to plate Kigar and make it 1-0.

The Tigers looked like they had blown the game open in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-out rally. Zach Miller started it all with a single. After a double by designated hitter Marcus Jenkins, Kyler Burkhiser delivered a two-run single. He came in to score on a triple by Blessing that made it 4-0.

Milan got two of the runs back in the top of the fifth as Kigar appeared to tire. He allowed three walks before a key error allowed two runs to score.

Milan completed the rally in the sixth after a walk and an error helped Milan load the bases. A two run single chased Kigar from the game with the score knotted at 4-4.

Thrasher relieved and was able to work out of the jam with a strikeout.

SCR-I regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as the bats came to life. Chris Jackson led off with a double. Jenkins worked a base on balls and Burkhiser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Blessing delivered an RBI single to make it 5-4. But the Tigers stranded the bases loaded failing to add any insurance runs.

Thrasher didn't need any cushion as he worked around a leadoff single to retire the final three batters and nail down the 5-4 win. He picked up the victory, working 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs and no walks while striking out one. Kigar got a no decision after working 5 2/3 innings. Just one of the four runs charged to the junior was earned on five hits and five walks. He fanned 11 batters.

Blessing led the offense, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Thrasher also was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI as SCR-I improved to 2-1 on the season.
