Tigers Rally for 4-2 Win Over Canton in Baseball Season Debut

Chris Jackson drove in the winning runs in the Tigers 4-2 victory over Canton.

To say Mother Nature has been hard on the Scotland County baseball program in 2013 would be an understatement.

Despite the weather hardships, the Tigers opened the season on March 19th with a 4-2 victory over Canton, in a game that was moved to Canton due to poor field conditions in Memphis.

Not only was it the team's first victory of the season, it was the first time this year the team had actually been able to take infield on a true baseball diamond.

It wasn't the team's glove work that was rusty. Coach Daniel Burns said the defense behind starter Cordie Kigar was pretty solid in the debut despite plenty of new faces in key spots.

Both runs charged to Kigar were earned, albeit one of them was courtesy of the shallow right field fence at Canton.

"That was a fly ball in any other ballpark we play in, but it was a home run at Canton," Burns said.

SCR-I fell behind 1-0 before tying the contest. The home run put the team down 2-1 heading into the sixth inning.

The Tigers' bats finally came alive in the nick of time. Jacob Blessing drove in a run to knot the score before Chris Jackson delivered the key blow, a two-run single to put SCR-I on top 4-2.

Kigar closed out the complete game victory. He faced just 31 batters over seven innings of work, striking out 15 and walking five.

Jackson and Blessing were both 1-3 at the plate, accounting for three RBIs. Catcher Tyler Buford was 1-4, driving in the other SCR-I run.

The Tigers debuted a totally new look in the field. Blessing is taking over at 3B after playing center field last season. Jacob Hull, who played right field as a freshman, is now manning first base, replacing Buford, who has moved behind the plate. Kigar and transfer Austin Thrasher will share the pitching duties and the shortstop job when not pitching. Cody Parkins and Mason VanHoozen will share the second base job, where Kigar played last season. Zach Miller is playing left field with Jackson in center field and Kyler Burkhiser in right. Transfer Marcus Jenkins is playing designated hitter.
