Lady Tigers Smother La Plata in Final Three Quarters of 40-26 Win
Defense wins championships, and Scotland County's stingy 1-2-2 zone trap added another notch in the victory column for the Lady Tigers who held La Plata to single digit scoring in the final three periods of a 40-26 win on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs appeared to have the answer for the SCR-I's defense early on. Samm Jett hit a three-pointer and added a pair of field goals as La Plata pulled ahead 13-10 despite a quick start by Hailey Dial. The SCR-I junior had six first quarter points and Katie Howard had a pair of field goals to account for all of the scoring.
Randi Slaughter canned a pair of three-pointers and Dial also connected from behind the arc as SCR-I got its offense rolling in the second period. Bethany Rader had a pair of field goals in the paint as the Lady Tigers outscored La Plata 15-6 to pull ahead 25-19 at half time.
The defense clamped down even more in the third period. SCR-I held La Plata to just two field goals over the next eight minutes. Rader had six points and Slaughter and Megan Creek added field goals to push SCR-I advantage to 35-23.
Rader scored all five of Scotland County's points in the final eight minutes but that was more than enough, as the defense held La Plata to just three points in the fourth period to seal the 40-26 win.
Scotland County improved to 16-5 on the season behind Rader's 15 points. Slaughter finished with 10 points and Dial added nine.
La Plata was led in scoring by Jett with 12 points.
