Lady Tigers Prevail Over Putnam County in Overtime

Katie Howard gets open in the middle of the Putnam County defense for two points during the Lady Tigers' overtime win.

With nearly 170 points scored in the nightcap, the idea that the baskets weren't functioning correctly was blown out of the water, but something was still amiss in Thursday night's Tri-Rivers Conference tilt between Scotland County and Putnam County as the girls struggled to put the ball in the basket.

In the game's first eight minutes, both teams combined to send just three balls through the hoop. While that disproved the theory there was a lid on the basket, both teams were left scratching their heads by the difficult shooting conditions.

A three-pointer by Camile Banez was the lone made shot of the first period for Putnam County. SCR-I actually pushed two shots through, a free throw by Hailey Dial and a field goal by Bethany Rader.

SCR-I looked poised to blow the game open in the second period. Megan Creek drained a three-pointer. Katie Howard then hit a jumper before connecting from long distance to make the score 11-6. A bucket by Jessica Morrow made it 13-8 with 3:29 left in the first half.

Turnovers helped keep SCR-I scoreless the remainder of the period and clinging to the five-point advantage.

SCR-I went scoreless the first six minutes of third period before Megan Creek scored on a drive to the hoop to push the lead to 15-12 with 1:54 on the clock. Howard followed that up with a three-pointer to give SCR-I some breathing room with an 18-14 lead.

Putnam County rallied to tie the score at 18-18 with 5:15 left in the contest. The two teams continued to struggle to put the ball in the basket, but Putnam County finally took the lead down the stretch, pulling ahead 22-18.

Randi Slaughter gave SCR-I life with a late three-pointer to trim the deficit to one. SCR-I completed the rally as Jessica Morrow scored in the paint with just seconds left to play to put the Lady Tigers ahead 23-22.

But the Lady Tigers committed the Cardinal sin, fouling Putnam County with just 0.1 seconds left on the clock. The official ruled it was not in the act of shooting, but it still sent Banez to the free throw line for a 1-1. Banez sank the first to tie the contest but the second shot rimmed out, sending the game to overtime. The game ended with a bit of confusion, as one official thought the foul was called in the act of shooting, which would have resulted in three free throws, but the situation was resolved.

Putnam County jumped ahead to start the overtime before Howard brought SCR-I back with a clutch three-pointer. A field goal by Morrow pushed the lead to three.

SCR-I continued to put Putnam County on the free throw line late, keeping the Midgets in the contest. But it was SCR-I's Morrow who put the contest away with two free throws that sealed the 30-26 victory.

Scotland County improved to 13-4 on the season. Howard finished with 11 points to lead all scorers. Morrow added eight points for the victors.
