Putnam County Nears Triple Digits in Win Over Tigers
Lucas Howard glides between two Putnam County defenders to put up a shot in Thursday night's home game.
A three-pointer away from triple digits. That was the case Thursday night in Memphis as Putnam County nearly broke 100 points of offense, blasting Scotland County 97-70. It wasn't for lack of trying either, as the Midgets connected on 11 three-pointers on the evening.
The Tigers kept pace early on, as baskets by Jacob Blessing and Lucas Howard tied the game. But SCR-I, already playing without big man Bailey Johnston, out for the year with an ankle injury, lost Howard. The junior center went to the locker room after a foul opened up a cut over his eye.
Freshman Zach Doubet made one of Howard's two free throws and Kyler Burkhiser connected on a jumper that had SCR-I down just 9-7 with 4:13 to play in the first period.
That was as close as the Tigers would get. Putnam County went on an 11-0 run that was finally ended by a three-pointer from Brice Cowell. He added a basket on a drive to the hoop that made it 20-12 at the end of the first period.
Howard returned to the game in the second period and converted a shot in the paint. Cowell drained a long jumper to trim the deficit to 20-16.
But again the Midgets responded with a scoring outburst fueled by the three-point shooting of Trey Ream. The senior guard connected from behind the arc four times in the second period.
The 10-0 run was halted by a three-pointer from Blessing. The sophomore hit a pair of shots from behind the arc as SCR-I tried to keep pace. Cordie Kigar also connected from long distance but Putnam County still led 45-31 at the intermission.
The Midgets proved they are not one dimensional on offense. Center Deion Hunt poured in 12 points in the third period.
SCR-I kept pace courtesy of the three-point shooting of Kigar. The junior canned a trio of shots from behind the arc. But a three-pointer by Ream was the difference in scoring as Putnam County extended the margin to 71-54 with just eight minutes to play.
Cory Lewis canned a pair of three-pointers in the fourth period for the Midgets and Hunt continued his strong play in the paint with 11 fourth-quarter points to help Putnam County close in the 100-point mark.
SCR-I did work of its own in the paint as Howard had six points and Will McRobert had four points in the final period before time ran out on the 97-70 loss.
Howard finished with 18 points to lead Scotland County (8-9) in scoring. Kigar had 14 points while Cowell finished with 12 points and Blessing added 12 points.
Hunt led all scorers with 34 points for the Midgets. Ream finished with 24 points and Lewis had 21 points.
