Marion County Rains Three-Pointers on Tigers in 74-45 Loss

Brice Cowell puts up the reverse layup as he beats two Marion County defenders during Monday night's home game.

A heat wave in January brought the rain to Memphis on Monday night, and that unlikely weather front appeared to also have sparked some rain of a different sort inside the Scotland County gym.

Unfortunately for the home team, the storm came in the form of three-pointers being rained down by the visitors, Marion County.

The Mustangs made six three-pointers in the game's opening eight minutes nullifying SCR-I's advantage in the paint. Early on, Marion County could not stop Lucas Howard in the post as the junior scored on the games first three possessions.

The guests instead answered on the other end, trading three-point field goals for Howard's two pointers to build an 11-6 lead with 4:45 left on the clock.

Marion County then turned up the defensive pressure, mounting a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 17-6 before Jacob Blessing scored on a drive to the basket. A jumper by Kyler Burkhiser closed out the first period with the Tigers trailing 25-10.

The impressive perimeter shooting spilled over into the second period for Marion County. The Mustangs canned five more shots from behind the arc.

Blessing hit a three-pointer for the Tigers but the bulk of Scotland County's scoring in the second quarter came at the free throw line. Howard and Brice Cowell each made four free throws. that wasn't nearly enough to fend off the 46-25 lead for Marion County.

Logan Krigbaum made his seventh, and final three-pointer to open the third period as Marion County turned the offense over to the forward duo of Kason Spratt and Clay Pollard. The two Mustangs combined for 12 points to help further extend the lead to 61-33.

The only offense the Tigers were able to mount was hitting Burkhiser at the free throw line. The sophomore had the range on the mid-range jumper, knocking down three shots.

Marion County outscored the home team 13-12 down the stretch to seal the 74-45 victory.

Scotland County dropped to 9-10 on the season. Howard led the team in scoring with 14 points. Brice Cowell finished with 10 points and Burkhiser had eight points.

Krigbaum led Marion County with 21 points. Pollard and Spratt each added 13 points.
