Howard Scores 27 as Tigers Capture Consolation Prize
Cordie Kigar puts up the shot off the baseline drive during the Tigers victory Friday night in the North Shelby Tournament.
Schuyler County simply did not have an answer for Lucas Howard on Friday night in the consolation game of the North Shelby Tournament as Scotland County captured the trophy with a 45-38 victory.
The junior forward poured in 27 points on the night to help the Tigers improve to 7-8 on the season.
Howard had 11 points in the first period, helping the Tigers take a three-point lead at the end of the first period.
His two free throws with 7:17 to play in the second period made the score 13-8. A basket in the paint by Kyler Burkhiser finally put a second Tiger in the score book.
He and Howard both converted field goals on offensive rebounds and Jacob Hull added a pair of free throws that kept SCR-I on top 21-18 at the intermission.
SCR-I extended the margin early in the third period. Burkhiser connected on a jumper before Jacob Blessing hit the Tigers lone three-pointer of the game. A field goal on an offensive rebound by Brice Cowell pushed the lead to 28-20 and forced a Schuyler County time out with 4:29 left in the third period.
Howard and Cowell each had field goals to close out the third quarter with SCR-I leading 32-27.
A fast break bucket by Cordie Kigar and two field goals from Howard helped Scotland County extend the lead to double digits to start the fourth period. But the Rams clawed their way back into the game. Howard helped fend off the rally with six points down the stretch to help preserve the 45-38 win.
