Shooting Sports Club to Host Gun Appreciation Day

Area enthusiasts will aim to make some positive news regarding firearms, as members of the Scotland County 4-H Shooting Sports program will be hosting the group's first annual Gun Appreciation Day, Saturday, January 19th at Bange's Gun Shop in Memphis.

A soup luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chili and loaded bake potato soup will be served as well as deserts for a free will offering.

The local event will coincide with the national Gun Appreciation Day celebrations across the United States as proclaimed recently by a new coalition of gun rights and conservative groups. The event is calling for Americans nationwide to show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast.

Scheduled to send a message to Washington two days before Obama's second inauguration, the "Gun Appreciation Day" is expected to rival "Chick-fil-A Day" as a public statement of protest against government policies.

"The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people," said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward, president of Political Media, Inc. "If the American people don't fight back now, Obama will do the Second Amendment what he has already done to the First with Obamacare - gut it without a moment's thought to our basic constitutional rights."

The local shooting sports program follows the statewide 4-H model, offering a youth education and development program open to youth ages 8 to 18 that teaches participants how to safely handle firearms. 4-H members can participate in archery and air rifle or BB gun categories as well as standard firearms such as small bore .22 caliber rifles, shotguns, muzzle loaders and small bore pistols.

The programs target development of self-confidence, personal discipline, responsibility, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Scotland County Shooting Sports leaders include Sarah McSparren, Keith Payne, Clint VanGorkom, Shelley Curry, Jim Long, Dave Koch, Kelly Ward and Corey Ward.

Attend Saturday's event to learn more about the program or contact any of the leaders for more information.
