Eighth Grade Girls Basketball Team Completes Perfect Season

The Scotland County eight grade girls basketball team closed out the 2012 basketball season undefeated.

The Lady Tigers opened the year with a 28-16 win over Clark County on October 29th in Memphis. Calesse Bair led the way with nine points. Chelsea Wood had eight and Abi Feeney finished with seven points.

SCR-I crushed Canton 40-18 on October 30th to improve to 2-0. Wood had 12 points and Bair added 10 in the victory.

The team traveled to Queen City on November 5th and brought home a 37-22 win over the Rams behind 13 points from Bair and 10 points by Wood. Feeney added six points and Anna Monroe had four.

The Lady Tigers clamped down on defense the following night, holding Clark County to just four points in a 30-4 win. Rebekah Duzan had eight points to lead the way. Wood and Bair each added eight points.

The team improved to 5-0 with a 31-17 win over Putnam County on November 9th. Bair led the way with eight points. Maddie Brassfield had seven points and Monroe finished with six points.

Milan was the next victim of the steamroller as SCR-I cruised to a 35-17 win at the Putnam County Tournament. Wood led all scorers with 12 points. Bair added seven points and Monroe finished with seven.

Scotland County bested the host team 21-11 to advance to the tournament championship game. Wood topped the scorebook with 10 points and Bair had eight points.

The Lady Tigers claimed the trophy with a 22-13 win over Schuyler County in a defensive struggle. Bair had 10 points for SCR-I and Feeney added five.

Offense was again hard to come by for SCR-I but the defense helped the girls remain unbeaten with a 20-14 win over North Shelby. Bair led the way with 10 points. Feeney and Wood each had four points.

SCR-I improved to 10-0 with a 19-4 victory over Knox County. Wood and Bair each had six points and Duzan had three points.

The Lady Tigers closed out November with a 21-11 win over Schuyler County. Feeney was top scorer with seven points. Bair had six points and Monroe had four points while Ashleigh Creek added three.

The team opened the Schuyler County tourney with a 30-7 win over the Clark County seventh graders. Bair and Feeney each had seven points and Monroe had six points.

SCR-I bested Putnam County 35-15 to advance to the tournament title game. Wood led the scoring attack with eight points. Bair added seven points and Monroe had six. Stevi See and Feeney both pitched in five points.

The perfect season nearly slipped away in the finale, but the Lady Tigers held on for a 21-20 win over Schuyler County. Bair scored eight points in the win. Feeney had five points and Monroe added four.

"That was the first time since I started coaching in 1986 that our girls have taken first in that tournament," said coach Gary Hunziker.

Scotland County finished the season 14-0.
