JOAN KINNEY LESLIE
(9/22/1927 - 8/18/2013)
Joan Kinney Leslie, 85, passed away August 18, 2013, in Falls Church, Virginia after complications following a recent stroke.
Joan was from the Midwest, born in Keokuk, Iowa on September 22, 1927, the daughter of Bernice K. and Hilles R. Leslie. She spent her childhood in Memphis, Missouri and graduated from Jefferson City High School and then Missouri University with a B.A. in Personnel Administration. She was a Tri Delta sorority sister and kept many of these sisters as her close friends throughout life.
After college, Joan initially went to work for Universal Match Company in St. Louis, Missouri and then moved to Washington, DC in the early 1950’s to live with her father, Hilles Leslie and mother, Bernice, both of whom worked on Capitol Hill. In DC, Joan initially worked for the U.S. Post Office before making a career move to the C.I.A. to work as a Personnel Officer there for the next 30 years.
Following her retirement in 1983 at age 55, Joan was able to concentrate on her favorite sport – golfing – at which she was quite proficient (a sport her father also loved) and went on to golf in and manage many tournaments at Old White Flint and Brook Manor in Maryland and Cedar Crest in Virginia.
Joan was also a member of the P.E.O. as was her mother before her, and a member of the Presbyterian Church. Joan always had a large coterie of friends, many of them golfers, who admired her and loved her crazy sense of humor. Joan was also an avid sports fan, especially for the Nationals.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves many friends as well as a number of first cousins: Marianne McDermott of Falls Church, Virginia, William McDermott of Chico, California, Barbara Burneson and Frances Culver of Boulder, Colorado, and Nancy Harris of Memphis, Missouri. She also leaves her dear cats, Tigger and Tami.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Everly Funeral Care in Falls Church, Virginia. Joan was buried next to her parents at the Memphis Cemetery in Memphis, Missouri, on August 25, 2013 at 2 P.M. with Craig Dawson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family and friends ask that donations to the Humane Society of the United States be considered.
Memphis Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.
