Community Thanksgiving Service Highlights Ministerial Alliance's Season of Giving

Local Boy Scouts highlight the food drive donations made at the Community Thanksgiving Service as Pastor Jack Sumption discusses the program. A love offering of just over $1,000 was taken in for the Tiger Pack program.

The holiday season brought fellow ministers and servants of the Lord together Sunday evening at Scotland County R-I Elementary School Gym for the Community Thanksgiving Service.

The Scotland County Ministerial Alliance (SCMA) hosted the event that featured scripture readings by representatives of eight area churches as well as a variety of hymns and musical selections including a solo by Schelle Cooley, a piano solo by Leah Terrill and a performance by the Methodist Church Bell Choir.

"We focus on the common bond we share as God's children and the commission He gave us for reaching lost souls," said Jack Sumption of the First Christian Church. "We endeavor to exercise our faith by meeting physical needs of those in our community, to comfort and encourage fellow Christians and to make use of open doors provided by acts of benevolence to share the greater spiritual need of all mankind to know God through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord."

The physical needs were a theme of the evening, which served as a food drive as well as a fundraiser for the Tiger Pack program that provides weekend meals for needy students.

Local Boy Scouts were in charge of the evening's food drive, which combined with ongoing efforts at the school to help stock the food pantry.

The SCMA Alliance Aid fundraising campaign will kick off this Friday. Contributions to Alliance Aid are used to stock the alliance's emergency food pantry and to help assist those in need with utility bills, medical expenses and other necessities when people experience a shortfall.

Shopping carts marked "Alliance Aid" will be located near the doors inside Dollar General, J's Food and Shopko to receive food, household items and monetary donations.

In addition, monetary donations can also be made at the Alliance Aid boxes.

"We would greatly appreciate shoppers donating their loose change after they have checked out at one of these stores," said organizer Pam Glasgow. "Or better yet, simply round it up to a dollar. What a difference it could make if each customer could do that for the needy."

Organizers note, that unlike other charitable fund-raising campaigns held at the national level, everything that is donated to the fundraiser stays right here in Scotland County.

In the past the community has generously donated food and household items and has contributed approximately $1,000.

Glasgow added that and community service organizations that are willing to donate time to man the locations can contact her at 465-2597.

The fundraising boxes will also be available next Saturday at the SCR-I High School during the Christmas Bazaar.

SCMA members believe thanksgiving or 'an attitude of gratitude' to be an acknowledgement of God's goodness and gracious provision for all His creation and most abundantly for His children through Christ Jesus or Lord," said Dan Hite of the First Baptist Church.
